Sainsbury's and Argos pull three tote bags over dangerous phthalate levels

Sainsbury's, together with Argos, has issued an urgent recall of three TU tote shopper bags after the Office for Product Safety and Standards identified excessive phthalate levels that pose a serious chemical risk. The affected styles are the Tu Pu Tan Curved Top Shopper, the Tu Black Croc Winged Tote Bag, and the Tu Brown Belt Handled Core Shopper, each listed with specific SKU and item numbers. Phthalates, known endocrine-disrupting chemicals, may damage children's reproductive systems and are prohibited under the REACH Enforcement Regulations 2008.

The regulator warned shoppers to stop using the bags immediately and to return them to any Sainsbury's or Argos outlet for a full refund. Sainsbury's emphasized that the products do not meet its safety standards and offered a help line and website for queries. The company also asked customers to share the recall notice and apologized for any inconvenience caused.
