Saint Lucia Prime Minister Pierre Begins Five-Day State Visit to Taiwan

Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre arrived in Taiwan for a five-day state visit, meeting President Lai Ching-te and senior officials.

Saint Lucia’s Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre arrived in Taipei on Tuesday to start a five-day state visit to Taiwan. He will be received with a military honors ceremony and later attend a banquet hosted by Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung, before holding talks with President Lai Ching-te on issues of mutual interest and future cooperation. Accompanying Pierre are Attorney General Leslie Mondesir, Senator Allison A. Jean and Daryl Raymond, chairman of the Saint Lucia Development Bank.

Their program includes stops at Cathay General Hospital, the iconic Taipei 101 tower and the TSMC Museum of Innovation in Hsinchu. The visit marks Pierre’s fourth trip to Taiwan since taking office in 2021 and underscores Saint Lucia’s status as one of only twelve countries that recognize the Republic of China over the People’s Republic of China.

Why it matters

The trip reinforces Taiwan’s limited diplomatic network and highlights Saint Lucia’s continued support amid pressure from the People’s Republic of China.
