In the opening Group A game of the Women's Basketball World Cup, Japan edged Mali 102-97 thanks to a standout performance by shooting guard Saki Hayashi, who tallied 27 points and a record nine three-point makes. Her accuracy from distance, 9-of-15, helped Japan break the tournament record for team threes, reaching 20 in the contest. Teammates Kokoro Tanaka and Maki Takada supplied 18 and 14 points respectively, with Takada coming off the bench.

Japan trailed 71-73 early in the fourth quarter but surged ahead to secure the victory. Coach Corey Gaines' squad will face Germany next before concluding the group stage against Spain, with the tournament winner earning a spot at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
