Salmonella outbreak forces culling of chickens at Českobudějovice farm

Repeated salmonella detections at a farm in Českobudějovice led authorities to order the destruction of the laying hens.

Following a series of salmonella findings at a poultry operation in Českobudějovice, the regional veterinary administration imposed extraordinary measures. The farmer opted for the culling of the hens, a step coordinated with the State Veterinary Service’s emergency unit, which oversees the safe disposal of infected animals and site decontamination. Attempts to use a slaughterhouse were abandoned due to associated risks.

Six containers have been allocated by the State Material Reserves Management for the disposal. The outbreak prevented fresh eggs from the Mavela Dynín farm from entering the market. Salmonella, which causes gastrointestinal illness especially in vulnerable groups, can be eliminated by heating food above 70 °C for at least ten minutes.
