Salmonella outbreak linked to eggs from Aragon farm spreads to three EU countries

A bar in Vitoria served tortillas made with contaminated eggs, causing at least 13 illnesses, including three hospitalizations, and prompting a EU-wide alert.

An investigation by the Basque health department linked a food-borne illness cluster to tortillas prepared with eggs from a macro-farm in Mainar, Zaragoza. Thirteen people fell ill, three of whom required hospital care, after eating at a Vitoria bar. The EU Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) labeled the situation as the highest severity level and added France to the list of countries restricting the implicated eggs, alongside Spain and Portugal.

The Spanish food safety agency AESAN and the regional alert centre have not disclosed specifics such as brand names, batch numbers, or the full list of regions receiving the eggs, drawing criticism from consumer groups. The Aragon government confirmed an ongoing investigation and plans a meeting with the agriculture ministry to limit animal losses while testing all farm modules. This is the second salmonella episode linked to Aragon eggs in the Basque Country within three months.

Why it matters

Contaminated eggs can cause serious illness, and limited transparency hampers consumer safety and trust.
