Sammy Mahdi warns Belgium cannot afford to delay budget deal
CD&V leader Sammy Mahdi said Belgium must reach a budget agreement quickly, citing rising per-person interest costs.
In interviews on De Zevende Dag and VTM, Sammy Mahdi argued the country lacks the luxury of waiting for a fiscal pact. He warned that the average interest charge is currently €1,300 per Belgian and could climb to €2,000 by the end of the legislative term, reaching €3,000 in 2035 if policy stays unchanged. Mahdi urged the governing coalition to act responsibly, especially criticizing socialist partner Conner Rousseau’s stance on health-care spending.
Why it matters
The budget delay could increase household debt burdens and affect Belgium's fiscal stability.
