Samsung posts record Q2 operating profit as AI-driven memory chip demand soars

Samsung Electronics reported its highest quarterly operating profit, driven by a surge in AI server memory chip sales, while its shares fell on investment worries.

Samsung Electronics announced an operating profit of 89.5 trillion won for the second quarter, the largest in its history, propelled by booming demand for memory chips used in AI servers. The semiconductor arm benefited from rising chip prices, increased shipments of high-bandwidth memory, and strong AI infrastructure growth, which helped offset an operating loss in the mobile, television and home-appliance divisions. Total revenue reached a record 171.5 trillion won.

Shares of Samsung and rival SK Hynix fell sharply amid concerns about the companies’ combined 800 trillion-won investment in a new chipmaking hub and intensifying competition from China’s emerging memory producers. The firms also announced partnerships with U.S. AI leaders such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Nvidia and Broadcom, reflecting a broader push to secure AI-related semiconductor supply chains.
