Samsung Wallet to Enable WeChat Pay via QR Codes for Korean Users in China

Samsung Electronics signed an MoU with Tencent and Woori Bank to let Korean Samsung Wallet users pay with WeChat Pay in China using QR codes, without needing a separate Chinese account.

Samsung Electronics, Tencent and Woori Bank formalised a trilateral partnership in Shenzhen to expand Samsung Wallet Money’s functionality in China. The agreement allows Korean Samsung Wallet holders to make QR-code payments at any merchant that accepts WeChat Pay, eliminating the requirement to open a separate Chinese payment account. Users can either show a QR code from their phone or scan one through the app, with transactions free of foreign-exchange fees and earning Samsung Wallet points equal to 0.3 percent of the purchase amount.

The prepaid service, developed with Woori Bank, will later support credit-card QR payments in the first quarter of 2027. Samsung also intends to introduce NFC contactless payments in other overseas markets, enabling tap-to-pay at compatible terminals. Executives Chai Won-cheol, Daniel Hong and Jeong Jin-wan highlighted the goal of tailoring payment experiences to local markets through this collaboration.

Why it matters

The deal lets Korean travelers use familiar payment tools in China, simplifying cross-border commerce and boosting Samsung's mobile wallet reach.
