San Francisco prank overloads Waymo fleet, highlighting robotaxi cybersecurity gaps

A self-styled tech prankster coordinated 50 simultaneous Waymo ride requests on a dead-end street in San Francisco, forcing the service to pause and exposing weaknesses in robotaxi cyber safety.

In San Francisco, self-identified “tech prankster” Riley Walz orchestrated a denial-of-service attack by having 50 people request Waymo rides to the same dead-end street, causing a pile-up that forced the company to suspend service until the following morning. The stunt highlights the broader cyber-risk debate raised by Louay Abdelkader, director of product management at QNX, who argues that vehicle cybersecurity should be mandated with the same urgency as airbags.

Robotaxis are rapidly expanding, with Zoox receiving a federal commercial exemption, Tesla launching its Cybercab in multiple cities, and Waymo operating in 11 U.S. markets and partnering with Uber. Because autonomous fleets rely on numerous interconnected systems—ECUs, cloud links, sensors, and AI—their attack surface is large, and generative AI could enable faster, more sophisticated exploits. Some jurisdictions, such as Arizona and Michigan, have begun integrating cyber-security planning into autonomous-vehicle policies, while New York’s mayor Zohran Mamdani has prioritized taxi-driver labor concerns over cyber issues. Abdelkader urges lawmakers nationwide to adopt existing safety frameworks before a serious breach occurs.
