San Jose upscale eatery shut after live cockroach spotted in kitchen
Terra Restaurant and Bar, located on the third floor of Eataly Silicon Valley, had its health permit suspended after inspectors found a live cockroach and dead insects in the kitchen.
Inspectors from the County of Santa Clara Department of Environmental Health conducted a thorough review of Eataly Silicon Valley after a public complaint, focusing on the third-floor Terra Restaurant and Bar in San Jose. The team observed a live cockroach moving along the wall above the kitchen hand-washing sink and found additional dead cockroaches within the food-preparation zone. As a result, the restaurant's health permit was suspended on Friday and it was ordered to remove food residue from tables, equipment, floors and walls, and to discard any potentially tainted items.
Management told officials that pest-control services had already been performed and that cleaning and sanitizing were in progress. Terra can apply for a follow-up inspection; a single re-inspection is free, while further visits would incur hourly fees. If the venue passes the subsequent review, it may resume operations.
