Sánchez skips Trump’s UN-week reception, citing schedule conflicts

Pedro Sánchez has opted out of the customary reception offered by Donald Trump to heads of delegation at the start of the UN General Assembly’s 81st session, stating that his agenda does not allow participation. The prime minister’s published timetable for the Tuesday in question lists no afternoon events, the exact period reserved for the White House gathering. This marks a departure from his previous visits to New York, where he attended Trump’s receptions in 2018 and 2019 with his wife Begoña Gómez, and later joined Biden-hosted meetings in 2022 and 2023.

Last year, the Spanish delegation was led by the King instead of Sánchez. In 2024, Sánchez will focus on other UN-related activities, including the opening debate, a bilateral talk with UK Prime Minister Andy Burham, a tribute to Gloria Steinem, and participation in forums on AI-related child protection and Sustainable Development Goals.
