Santos' 1962 Libertadores campaign culminated in a landmark final against defending champions Peñarol. After a split result in Montevideo and a controversial abandoned match, a third leg was arranged at Buenos Aires' Estadio Monumental de Núñez. Pelé, recovered from injury, joined a lineup featuring Coutinho, Zito and others, and the team struck three goals within the first half, the third being an own-goal credited to Peñarol defender Caetano.

The win not only gave Santos its first continental trophy but also completed a quadruple that season, including the Campeonato Paulista, the Brazilian Championship and the Intercontinental Cup.
