Sarasota County School Board Shifts Away From Conservative Majority
Two candidates backed by Democrats won seats on the Sarasota County School Board, ending its conservative control.
The Sarasota County School Board, previously dominated by conservatives, lost its majority after Democrat-endorsed candidates Megan Tennimon and Beth Mayberry won their races. A runoff in November will decide whether Jimmy Glover, the remaining Democratic hopeful, becomes the board's first person of color. Former teachers Tennimon and Mayberry said voters were weary of the board's culture-war focus and the national attention it attracted.
Over the past four years, the board had eliminated references to race, sexuality and disability from its anti-bullying policy and expressed support for Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Statewide, Florida has pursued an anti-“woke” agenda, including bans on certain curricula and books, but local sentiment appears to be shifting.
Why it matters
The election signals a local move away from aggressive cultural policies, potentially reshaping school governance in Florida.
