Sarawak may call its 13th state election as early as December
Sarawak's 13th state election could be scheduled for December, pending Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Abang Openg's decision to dissolve the assembly.
Sarawak's 13th state election may be held as early as December, according to tourism minister Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, who said the assembly automatically expires in February 2027. The timing depends on Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Abang Openg's decision to dissolve the legislature, after which the Election Commission must organize a poll within 60 days. Karim argued that a December election avoids the complications of festive celebrations and Ramadan that would narrow the campaign window in January or February.
He noted that GPS, the ruling coalition, is ready for the contest and expects opposition parties to prepare as well. Candidate lists will be decided by GPS senior leaders, with an anticipated refresh of 10-30% of nominees to boost representation of women and younger members. Karim, who also holds the Asajaya seat, said he will defer to the Premier on whether to stand again.
Why it matters
The election timing will shape Sarawak's political landscape and affect governance for the next five years.
