Sarvam signs MoU with HQ IDS to develop AI framework for India's armed forces

Indian AI firm Sarvam has entered a memorandum of understanding with the Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff to create a sovereign AI platform for the Army, Navy and Air Force.

Sarvam, an Indian frontier-model company, has signed an MoU with the Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff of the Ministry of Defence to establish an umbrella AI framework for the Army, Navy and Air Force. The partnership also includes tri-service and integrated organisations under HQ IDS. Under the deal, Sarvam will create, deploy and maintain AI applications for operational, training and decision-support needs, using Indian data and sovereign compute resources.

Its firewalled Chanakya division will apply the Sarvam AI stack, including the Sarvam 105B foundation model, to deliver capabilities such as target acquisition, data fusion across the sensor-to-shooter loop and geospatial perception. The initiative seeks to ensure that critical AI layers are built and hosted domestically, reinforcing India's push for defence self-reliance. Co-founder Pratyush Kumar highlighted the mission to embed Indian intelligence into defence systems. HQ IDS will facilitate multiple projects across the services, providing a common AI fabric for the nation's military.

Why it matters
