Satellite images reveal record-low river levels across Europe amid worsening drought

Satellite observations compiled by a journalist at one outlet illustrate a dramatic retreat of water in Europe's key rivers, including the Loire near Saumur, the Garonne near Moissac, the Rhine near Kaub, the Po near Boretto, and the Danube in Hungary and Romania. The Joint Research Centre of the European Commission confirmed that these waterways have reached record-low levels, reflecting intensified drought that now covers about half of the continent, with 9 percent at alert status.
Visual changes include larger exposed islands, expanded sandy and gravelly riverbeds, and yellowing of urban green spaces such as London's Hyde Park and Vienna's parks. The Rhine's low water has halted shipping at a critical bottleneck, while the Garonne authority launched its earliest flow-support operation since 1993. Environmental agencies report severe soil moisture loss and reduced reservoir storage, especially in England where rainfall was a quarter of an inch in July.
