Satellite images show Kalimantan fire smoke drifting over Jakarta region

Satellite data revealed that smoke from fires in Kalimantan has moved into the atmosphere above Jakarta, Banten and West Java, staying at 2-3 km altitude.

Satellite imagery taken by Himawari-9 on Friday showed a smoke plume from forest and land fires in Kalimantan extending over Banten, Jakarta and West Java. The BMKG reported that the haze is present at an altitude of roughly 2 to 3 kilometers, meaning it has not touched the ground. Alpon Sepriando, who leads the agency’s satellite imagery analysis team, noted that winds in the lower atmosphere are blowing east-southeast to west-northwest, while higher-altitude winds move from northeast to southwest, pushing the smoke toward Java.

He warned that if wind speeds decrease, the smoke could settle lower and form a thin surface layer. The satellite detection does not confirm any increase in ground-level pollution or quantify its impact on Jakarta’s air quality. Firefighting efforts continue across Indonesia as authorities monitor the situation.

Why it matters

The drifting smoke could affect air quality in Indonesia's densely populated capital and surrounding regions.
