Saudi missile factory expansion hints at larger solid-fuel rockets, analysts say

Satellite analysis shows Saudi Arabia is enlarging its al-Duwadimi missile complex to produce bigger solid-fuel ballistic missiles, potentially extending range and payload.

Analysis of Planet Labs imagery from April 2025 to September 2026 reveals that Saudi Arabia is expanding the al-Duwadimi missile complex, adding a large building for solid-fuel casting pits and a possible storage facility. The new structures are at least twice the size of existing ones and feature blast-diverting walls, suggesting preparation for larger solid-propellant missiles. Researchers link the development to potential production of longer-range Chinese-derived missiles like the DF-21, which could allow Saudi forces to strike deeper into Iranian territory without using US-supplied aircraft.

The expansion aligns with a broader Middle-East trend, as the UAE and Turkey are also upgrading their missile capabilities. U.S. lawmakers may view the project as a further reason to oppose a civilian nuclear cooperation deal with Riyadh, citing proliferation concerns. Completion of the facilities could occur by the end of the year, enabling Saudi Arabia to boost its self-reliance in missile technology.

Why it matters

The upgrade could shift the regional military balance and affect U.S. policy on Saudi nuclear cooperation.

How the sides frame it

HIGH AGREEMENT

Both camps report the same expansion of Saudi missile facilities and its regional implications, with only minor differences in emphasis.

CENTER

Centrist coverage frames the expansion as part of a broader Middle-East missile buildup that could let Saudi Arabia strike deeper into Iran.

RIGHT

Right-leaning coverage frames the expansion as enhancing Saudi deterrence against Iran and intensifying Gulf missile competition.

The right emphasises

  • expansion boosts Saudi deterrence against Iran
  • links upgrades to Chinese DF-15/DF-21 technology
  • could spur Gulf missile competition and US congressional opposition
