SBI poised to issue sanction letter for its share of ₹35,000 crore Vi loan
State Bank of India is expected to send a sanction letter for its ₹7,000 crore portion of the ₹35,000 crore financing package sought by Vodafone Idea, pending the telco’s agreement with other lenders.
State Bank of India is likely to issue a sanction letter for its ₹7,000 crore contribution to a ₹35,000 crore loan package being arranged for Vodafone Idea. The bank had delayed approval until the telco pledged guarantees from its promoter companies, a condition now satisfied. SBI’s approval is expected to encourage other participating lenders—such as Bank of Baroda, Union Bank of India, Canara Bank, private banks and the National Bank for Financing Infrastructure and Development—to finalize their commitments.
The total funding will support Vi’s planned ₹45,000 crore capital expenditure over the next three years, including a 5G network rollout across 17 priority circles and a target to triple EBITDA. Of the package, ₹25,000 crore will come as funded facilities and ₹10,000 crore as a line of credit. The government, holding about 49 percent of Vi, has already restructured the operator’s AGR dues to improve cash flow. No comment was received from SBI or Vi at the time of publication.
Why it matters
The loan could stabilize India's third-largest telecom operator and enable a major 5G expansion.
