Scam websites exploit EU travel permit delays, offering fake ETIAS authorisations

Over 150 sites are selling bogus EU travel authorisations even though the ETIAS system has been postponed until at least 2027.

The rollout of the EU's Entry/Exit System has pushed the start of the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) back to at least 2027, leaving the launch date undefined. ABTA cautions holidaymakers that the official ETIAS website is the sole legitimate source and that over 150 other sites are falsely selling the authorisation. The scheme, which will eventually require visitors from visa-exempt countries to pay around €20 for electronic permission, is still inactive, meaning no genuine applications can be processed.

Aviation specialist Anton Radchenko notes that the prolonged uncertainty creates fertile ground for scammers. He advises travellers that any request to purchase an ETIAS online should be treated as a red flag. The situation highlights the need for clear communication to prevent consumer fraud.
