Schools suspend classes on World Education Day, resuming the following day

Romanian schools will not hold lessons on Monday for World Education Day, with classes restarting on Tuesday.

According to the decree governing the 2026-2027 school calendar, Romanian schools will be closed on Monday for World Education Day, and no instructional activities will take place for students or teachers. The break is mandated by law and collective labor agreements, and normal schooling will resume on Tuesday. One outlet school year started in early September and is scheduled for 36 weeks of classes.

The first teaching period runs until the Friday before the holiday, followed by a short vacation later in the month. World Education Day has been celebrated internationally since 1994 after UNESCO adopted a recommendation from 1966 concerning the status of teachers. In Romania, this day is distinct from the national Teacher's Day observed in early June.

Why it matters

The closure underscores Romania's participation in a global education observance and temporarily alters the school timetable.
