Science-Backed Tips for Making Your Dating-App Profile Stand Out
Psychology and communication scholars outline research-based strategies—like storytelling, moderate self-disclosure, and authentic photos—to help singles create more appealing dating-app bios.
In a study of dating-app bios, Reichman University psychologist Gurit Birnbaum discovered that many profiles either reveal too little or too much, often relying on generic language or overly sexualized images. Collaborating with communication expert Liesel Sharabi of Arizona State University, she recommends using imaginative yet honest descriptions that showcase personality, such as metaphorical statements and specific anecdotes.
Their findings show that narratives and concrete self-disclosures are perceived as more original and invite conversation, while moderate sharing signals seriousness without overwhelming readers. Juliana Schroeder of UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business adds that expressing a willingness to learn about the other person—like highlighting listening skills—further attracts interest. The scholars also stress using current, authentic photos that together tell a coherent story of one’s life, and they warn that AI-crafted bios are easily spotted and less effective.
