Science Minister Tanacs Zoltan Names Stipsicz Andras Interim Head of HUN-REN

Science Minister Tanacs Zoltan appointed Stipsicz Andras as interim president of the HUN-REN research network pending a permanent selection.

Science and Technology Minister Tanacs Zoltan has asked Stipsicz Andras, currently heading the Rényi Alfréd Mathematical Research Institute, to assume the role of interim president of the HUN-REN Magyar Kutatási Hálózat. Stipsicz will occupy the post while the HUN-REN governing board and supervisory committee work out the final organisational model and a formal presidential recruitment process is completed. The ministry clarified that the ultimate appointment is not within its remit nor Stipsicz’s personal decision, and the length of the interim term remains undefined.

This step follows a broader overhaul announced by the ministry, which intends to replace the entire leadership of the research network in the second half of the autumn legislative cycle. The restructuring traces back to the 2019 dissolution of the academic network, its absorption into the ELKH, and subsequent renaming to HUN-REN in 2023. Recent changes also saw the detachment of humanities institutes in 2025. Officials said a new governance structure will be created, but details are still pending.

Why it matters

The leadership change could shape the direction and autonomy of Hungary's national research network.
