Scientists and startups turn Australian waste into vinegar, biochar and other products

Researchers and entrepreneurs in Australia are converting landfill waste into valuable materials such as vinegar, biochar, oil and cellulose for paper and leather.

Ten years after beginning research on abalone waste, scientist Lynne Loo now acts as a waste broker, linking innovators with commercial opportunities. Home-lab inventor Matt Barber isolates cellulose from food scraps, which he can turn into paper, leather, wood-like products or bioplastic, offering a rapid alternative to tree growth. In Western Australia’s Collie region, Renergi employs thermal conversion technology to treat roughly 30,000 tonnes of biomass and 4,000 tonnes of municipal solar waste annually, converting more than 70% into vinegar, biochar and oil.

The biochar is already improving soil on fruit farms and a winery in Southern Western Australia. Funding from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency supports the venture’s expansion, with plans to become a leading one outlet producer once full capacity is reached. Loo emphasizes the importance of demonstrating feasibility amid scepticism.
