Scientists Deploy and Retrieve Submerged ‘Prefab’ Structures to Probe Palau’s Deep Reefs

Researchers placed autonomous reef monitoring structures in Palau’s mesophotic zones a decade ago and have now recovered them to analyze the hidden biodiversity of these deep reefs.

In 2016-2018, zoologist Luiz Rocha and colleagues deployed autonomous reef monitoring structures (ARMS) across mesophotic coral ecosystems in Palau and nearby Pacific islands, positioning them at 30-150 meters to capture colonizing organisms over time. Funding constraints postponed retrieval until a recent expedition returned to Palau, where divers recovered the PVC “hotel-like” frames and transported them to the Palau International Coral Reef Center.

Scientists from the California Academy of Sciences, Smithsonian Global ARMS program and other partners began dissecting the structures, cataloguing nearly 3,000 specimens that include sponges, octocorals, bryozoans, crabs, shrimp and nudibranchs. Early analysis shows only about 3 % identified to species level, with many likely representing new taxa pending DNA sequencing. Beyond taxonomy, the effort seeks to answer fundamental questions about energy flow, food webs, and climate vulnerability in these understudied reefs. Researchers hope the baseline data will guide future conservation strategies for deep-reef habitats.
