Scientists Deploy Wolbachia-Infected Male Mosquitoes to Counter Climate-Driven Disease Risk

As warming expands mosquito habitats, the San Gabriel Valley Mosquito Control District is releasing thousands of Wolbachia-carrying male Aedes aegypti to curb disease-spreading females.

Climate warming is extending the period during which disease-carrying mosquitoes thrive, leading agencies to adopt novel control methods. In the San Gabriel Valley, officials are now distributing weekly batches of 600 male Aedes aegypti mosquitoes sourced from MosquitoMate in Kentucky. These males carry Wolbachia, a naturally occurring bacterium that, when transferred to females during mating, makes them sterile for life, preventing egg hatch.

The district plans to release roughly 30,000 such males each week, aiming for a total of just under half a million releases, with early studies suggesting potential reductions of 70 to 95 percent in local populations. Similar Wolbachia programs run by the World Mosquito Program in 16 nations, including Brazil, have reported up to an 89 percent drop in dengue cases. Scientists stress that the approach does not involve genetic modification, relying instead on moving a natural bacterium between mosquito strains. Ongoing monitoring will determine whether fewer disease-bearing females are captured in traps, indicating success.
