Scientists explore cloud seeding to redirect hurricanes away from populated areas
A new peer-reviewed study suggests that targeted cloud seeding could alter a hurricane's path, potentially sparing vulnerable regions.
A recent study appearing in a peer-reviewed journal argues that deliberate cloud seeding may be used to steer hurricanes away from land. The authors, publishing under the Public Library of Science, describe how dispersing substances such as dry ice or silver iodide into a storm could trigger the formation of a new eyewall, which would contract and weaken the original one. They reference the 1960s U.S. Project Stormfury, when Navy pilots flew into hurricanes to test similar techniques.
Modeling suggests that Hurricane Sandy could have been displaced by about 200 miles, sparing New York City from its worst impacts. While the method remains contentious, the researchers claim the technology could be operational in the near future. The study emerges as Hawaii battles Hurricane Lala, which has already caused power outages, airport closures and one fatality.
