Scotland 2050 urges cross-party summit to unlock Grangemouth’s future

Scotland 2050, a cross-political policy platform, has urged the UK and Scottish governments, opposition parties and private investors to convene a summit on Grangemouth before the holiday season. In a recent submission to Chancellor John Healey, the group asked that existing funding - £200 million from the National Wealth Fund and £25 million from the Scottish Government - be redirected toward viable low-carbon projects rather than seeking fresh money.

It also requested that the Treasury disclose one outlet Grangemouth pipeline and clarify the fate of the £200 million if no project satisfies the fund’s return and net-zero criteria by a set date. The submission notes that the refinery closure eliminated several hundred skilled jobs, while Project Willow has outlined nine options, including sustainable aviation fuel, yet no capital has been drawn down. Scotland 2050 argues that a focused summit could align stakeholders, secure investment, and deliver economic benefits to the local community and Scotland at large.
