Scotland clinches playoff spot despite key injury and Czech comeback
Scotland beat Czechia 3-2 on the night to advance with a 5-2 aggregate win, securing a place in the next round of Women’s World Cup playoffs.
Scotland progressed to the Women’s World Cup second-round playoffs after a 3-2 home win over Czechia, extending their aggregate lead to 5-2. Despite an early Czech equaliser, Lauren Davidson, Kathleen McGovern and Christy Grimshaw scored to restore Scotland’s advantage. Coach Melissa Andreatta replaced Liverpool’s Kirsty MacLean with Grimshaw and coped with the loss of captain Caroline Weir to a pre-match injury, while Erin Cuthbert remained on the bench recovering from a knee issue.
The match, played before a large crowd at Marbill Coaches Stadium, also featured a historic trial allowing spectators to consume alcohol in the stands for the first time since 1981. The victory sets up a two-legged showdown with Sweden in the next playoff round.
Why it matters
The result keeps Scotland alive in the quest for a World Cup spot and showcases a new stadium alcohol policy.
