Scotland declares entire nation a bluetongue restricted zone

Scotland will treat the whole country as a bluetongue restricted zone from October 3, ending separate licences for livestock movement in the south-west.

Following detection of bluetongue on 40 premises, Scotland will designate the entire nation as a restricted zone starting October 3, replacing one outlet south-west-only area. The move, coordinated with industry bodies such as NFU Scotland and the Scottish Beef Association, eliminates the requirement for movement licences for susceptible livestock, easing administrative burdens during the crucial trading calendar. All infected farms remain under movement controls, and animals showing symptoms are still barred from transport.

Ministers emphasized that vaccination remains the most effective defence and encouraged farmers to secure doses now. Some restrictions, including bans on moving clinically affected animals and limits on shipments to Northern Ireland, will stay in place. A joint communications group will be set up to promote vaccination and provide guidance.
