Scotland faces criticism over delayed energy strategy publication

Opposition leader Boris Johnson urged Scottish Deputy First Minister John Swinney to release the long-awaited energy strategy without further postponement.

A draft of Scotland's energy strategy was first made public in January 2023, and the government had promised a final version by the summer of 2024. However, Deputy First Minister John Swinney has not set a publication date, stating only that it will appear "in due course." Opposition leader Boris Johnson described the prolonged wait as "ludicrous," arguing that a delay until late 2027 would leave workers and firms without the clarity needed for planning and investment in oil, gas, renewables and nuclear projects.

He urged Swinney to publish the document the following week when Parliament returns, warning that further postponement threatens future projects and skilled jobs. The Scottish Government was approached for comment but has not yet replied.

Why it matters

The timing of the energy strategy affects investment decisions and job security in Scotland's crucial energy sector.
