Scotland's First Minister pledges expanded offshore wind and climate investments ahead of Climate Week
First Minister John Swinney announced new funding for offshore wind, flood resilience and community energy projects as Scotland launches its Climate Week.
Ahead of Scotland's Climate Week, First Minister John Swinney pledged to boost investment in offshore renewable energy, flood protection and locally generated power. He linked climate action to national energy security, noting that extreme weather this summer underscores the urgency. The government will allocate £15 million to improve flood resilience, £14 million for coastal change adaptation and another £15 million to expand community energy schemes, aiming to lower household bills and improve efficiency.
Swinney reaffirmed support for the 4.1 GW Berwick Bank offshore windfarm, despite opposition from the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds over risks to gannets, kittiwakes, puffins, guillemots and razorbills. He called on citizens to consider their travel, heating and waste habits as part of the broader climate response.
