Scottish poll shows strong public backing for renewable investment and managed oil transition

A recent poll finds that nearly seven-in-ten Scots favor more renewable energy investment, while most want oil and gas decisions handled case-by-case.

Research by PF Global and IPPR Scotland shows that 63% of Scots want greater renewable-energy investment and 69% think oil-and-gas decisions should be evaluated individually. While 15% want new North Sea field restrictions removed and 11% call for an immediate drilling halt, the majority back a managed transition. Trust in the SNP to meet its net-zero manifesto is at 42%, compared with 25% for Labour and 27% for the Greens, and over half distrust Reform UK and the Conservatives on climate issues.

Almost half of respondents view politicians as ineffective, and 53% believe they prioritize personal interests. The report calls for a cross-party agenda this parliamentary term to support North East communities, create a skills passport, and track transition jobs, emphasizing investment in ports, colleges and supply chains. Experts David Hawkey and Daisy Powell-Chandler stress the need for concrete job and investment plans, while SNP MSP Dawn Black highlights the potential of Scotland’s clean-energy resources.

Why it matters
