Scrub typhus surges across Nepal, thousands infected and dozens die

More than 9,000 Nepalese have contracted scrub typhus this year, with cases now reported in 74 of the 77 districts and eight deaths in Salyan alone.

Since the start of the year, scrub typhus has affected more than 9,000 people across Nepal, reaching 74 of the country's 77 districts, according to the Epidemiology and Disease Control Division. The outbreak is especially severe in Salyan's Darma Rural Municipality, where over 600 infections and eight deaths have been confirmed. Health officials warn that anyone experiencing high fever, chills, severe headache, body aches, swollen lymph nodes, or a painless dark crust from a chigger bite should seek immediate care, particularly in known hotspots.

The disease can be treated with free antibiotics such as doxycycline and azithromycin, and test kits have been supplied to local health centers. While the exact death toll remains uncertain due to complications, officials note that underlying conditions increase mortality risk. Preventive advice includes wearing protective clothing and using insect repellent when working outdoors.

Why it matters

The outbreak threatens public health across Nepal, stressing the need for prompt treatment and preventive measures.
