Seagrass meadow transplanted off Ischia shows ecosystem functions after 17 years

Scientists revisiting a Posidonia oceanica transplant off Ischia have found that parts of the meadow now exhibit ecological traits similar to natural beds.

A 2009 seagrass transplantation off the Italian island of Ischia was re-examined in May 2026 by scientists from ISPRA under the Interreg Euro-MED ARTEMIS initiative. The team evaluated several restored plots, noting that those where transplanted shoots had firmly established now mirror many ecological indicators of adjacent natural Posidonia oceanica meadows. Findings include recovery of habitat structure, support for marine life, carbon storage and coastal protection functions.

Marine biologist Tiziano Bacci highlighted that the meadow is transitioning from a collection of surviving shoots to a functioning ecosystem, though some disparities are still under study. Senior researcher Barbara La Porta emphasized the importance of long-term monitoring to refine restoration techniques and distinguish short-term survival from genuine ecological recovery.
