Search concludes for missing passengers after MV Matui capsizes between Santo and Ambae

Nine days after the MV Matui overturned in turbulent waters between Santo and Ambae, the Vanuatu Maritime Safety Authority announced the end of the search for those still missing. Deputy commissioner Lloyd Fikiasi stated that two individuals have been confirmed dead, 14 people survived, and 38 remain unaccounted for. The authority will now commission an independent investigation into the vessel’s safety procedures and handle civil claims from families.

Commissioner Less John Napuati clarified that the ship had never been authorized to transport passengers and that criminal proceedings are being considered against the captain and the vessel’s owners. Maritime researcher Dr Neil Baird highlighted that Pacific nations experience some of the highest per-capita ferry fatality rates, describing the incident as indicative of a broader regional safety issue. The upcoming probe aims to address systemic shortcomings and hold responsible parties accountable.
