Search extended as dozens remain missing after Java Sea ferry disaster

The Virgo Transport 8 ferry sank in the Java Sea after losing contact with its operator on its August 13 voyage from Surabaya to Banjarmasin, carrying over two hundred passengers and crew. Basarnas has recovered three bodies, raising the confirmed death toll to nine, while 126 individuals remain missing. Operations director Yudhi Bramantyo said authorities will extend the search for another week as they await decisions on the salvage plan.

Divers are set to enter the wreck, contingent on suitable weather conditions. Indonesian maritime incidents are frequent due to lax safety standards and volatile weather, underscoring the challenges of ensuring safe sea transport across the archipelago.
