Seasonal retail hiring set to hit its lowest level since the financial crisis
Seasonal job openings in retail are expected to fall to their weakest point since the financial crisis, with estimates around 450,000 positions.
The annual surge of seasonal retail positions is tapering, with projections indicating roughly 450,000 hires— the lowest growth in almost 20 years and the smallest since the financial crisis. Challenger, Gray & Christmas notes this figure falls short of last year's 461,000 openings. Spirit Halloween and Michaels are leading the push, targeting 52,000 and 10,000 seasonal roles respectively, while Walmart and Target have offered no new hiring numbers, citing reliance on existing staff and on-demand workers.
Recruiters observe that retailers are moving hiring forward to the summer months to have full staffing levels by October. This shift could diminish a common entry point for workers, who make up about one in ten of the U.S. labor force and often start their careers in retail.
Why it matters
Fewer seasonal retail jobs limit entry-level employment opportunities and signal broader hiring caution in the economy.
