Second oral test confirms Socceroos star Cristian Volpato tested positive for cocaine
A follow-up oral fluid test has again shown that Socceroos midfielder Cristian Volpato had cocaine in his system after his initial roadside test.
Authorities announced that a secondary oral fluid sample from Socceroos midfielder Cristian Volpato returned a positive result for cocaine, reinforcing the earlier roadside test that he had denied. NSW Police issued a traffic infringement notice and fined him $722, while also suspending his international driver’s licence for six months after he was caught speeding on Anzac Bridge. Volpato travelled to Italy to join Sassuolo, where he has already netted two goals in five matches, but a hamstring strain in a recent game will keep him out of Australia’s friendlies against Brazil in Queensland.
His legal counsel, Paul McGirr, intends to challenge the fine and question the sampling procedure, alleging possible contamination. Football Australia said it is seeking independent verification of the secondary test, and coach Tony Popovic noted that the injury, not the drug issue, will determine Volpato’s availability for the national team.
