Section 144 bans imposed in Upper and Lower South Waziristan amid security concerns

Deputy Commissioners Musarrat Zaman and Irfan Ali ordered Section 144 restrictions in Lower and Upper South Waziristan, halting movement on key roads and closing markets to aid security-force logistics.

On Friday, Deputy Commissioner Musarrat Zaman of Lower South Waziristan and Deputy Commissioner Irfan Ali of Upper South Waziristan each issued Section 144 orders for Saturday. The Lower district barred public movement in areas such as Wana Bazaar, the Wana Bypass and nearby routes, and ordered the closure of markets to facilitate the safe transport of logistical supplies for security forces. The Upper district imposed comparable restrictions in Servekai and Sararogha tehsils, closing commercial centres and prohibiting travel on roads leading to Ladha, Makeen, Sararogha, Nazar Khel and other points.

Exceptions are permitted for emergencies, provided travelers obtain prior authorization from police or security forces, and special provisions were made for polio vaccination teams. Motorists are instructed to stop at least 50 metres away from any security personnel and to disembark if ordered. Violations will be prosecuted under the applicable law, and residents were urged to cooperate and avoid unnecessary travel.

Why it matters

The bans limit civilian movement and commerce, affecting daily life while security forces move essential supplies.
