Security forces intervene after sectarian brawl erupts in Syrian Christian town

Security troops were deployed to Suqaylabiyah after young Sunnis from nearby Qalaat Al Madiq sparked a fight, authorities said.

Security personnel were sent to the central Syrian town of Suqaylabiyah after a fight erupted involving young Sunnis from the nearby settlement of Qalaat Al Madiq. The confrontation, described by state television as a brawl among youths that included an assault on a shop, prompted authorities to deploy troops equipped with automatic weapons and flak jackets. The Hama Governorate attributed the unrest to systematic incitement across Syrian society, while officials said the disturbance was contained and several participants were detained.

Video circulating on social media showed a fire in a street square and youths attempting to break into a shop. The town, home to roughly 16,000 Greek Orthodox residents, has seen its population decline since the fall of the previous regime in December 2024. No injuries or deaths were reported at the time of the incident.
