Ségolène Royal knocked out in first round of left-wing primary

Former presidential candidate Ségolène Royal was eliminated in the opening round of the left-wing primary, failing to advance to the runoff.

Ségolène Royal, who once ran for president, returned to the political arena by joining the left-wing primary but was defeated in the first round. Despite her reputation for provocative statements, she failed to gather sufficient votes to qualify for the second round. Her only public meeting, held in Alfortville in the Val-de-Marne department, drew a modest crowd, with many participants questioning her relevance or stating they would not vote in the primary at all.

Throughout the campaign, she attempted to shake up a lackluster contest and even labeled the leading candidate, Raphaël Glucksmann, with a disparaging nickname. Nevertheless, her efforts did not translate into electoral support, and she exited the race early.

Why it matters

The result shows the limited appeal of former high-profile politicians in current intra-party contests.
