Seine-et-Marne to test FR-Alert system across 56 municipalities

The prefecture of Seine-et-Marne will conduct a trial of the FR-Alert emergency notification system in 56 communes, sending alerts that sound even on silent phones.

The Seine-et-Marne prefecture is launching a practical test of the FR-Alert system in 56 communes, delivering a warning that will ring on phones even when set to silent. Recipients will see a notice marked as an exercise and hear a unique sound. The trial includes areas surrounding high-risk industrial installations, several of which are classified Seveso, as well as the vicinity of the Nogent-sur-Seine nuclear power station.

Drivers and travelers passing through the zones at the time of the broadcast will also receive the alert. Authorities emphasize that the drill does not require any protective measures from the population. This exercise aligns with a national day aimed at educating citizens about emergency procedures. The FR-Alert system, introduced in France in June 2022, is designed for rapid alerts in cases such as industrial accidents, floods, or fires.

Why it matters

It demonstrates how authorities can quickly warn people in high-risk zones, testing a system that could save lives during real emergencies.
