SEIU official accused of extorting billionaire-tax endorsement and harassing women staff
A SEIU West president faces allegations of attempting to force a state-council endorsement of a billionaire tax and of threatening and assaulting female union leaders.
An investigation commissioned by the Service Employees International Union found that SEIU United Health Workers West President Dave Regan allegedly attempted to coerce the SEIU California state council into endorsing the billionaire-tax ballot measure by hinting at a Department of Labor investigation. The same probes substantiate claims that Regan threatened female leaders, notably Tia Orr, and that he physically assaulted former executive director Courtni Pugh in 2009.
Regan has rejected the allegations, asserting they are retaliation for his support of Proposition 40. SEIU California leaders have filed formal charges and temporarily barred Regan from council offices to protect staff. The national union has retained an independent law firm to conduct a separate review, and a hearing will be scheduled to determine any disciplinary action. SEIU President April Verrett holds authority to suspend Regan pending the outcome.
