Selangor religious authority detains two suspects in alleged khalwat case involving a politician

The Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) said two people were arrested around 6 p.m. in Petaling over a suspected khalwat offence linked to an unnamed politician.

The Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) announced the detention of two persons in connection with an alleged khalwat incident in the Petaling district, occurring at about 6 p.m. The arrests relate to a possible breach of Section 29 of the Syariah Criminal Offences (Selangor) Enactment 1995, which carries penalties of up to RM3,000, two years' imprisonment, or both. Both detainees were moved to Jais's office in Shah Alam for documentation.

While Jais did not reveal the names of the individuals, media reports suggest the case involves a senior political figure, whose identity remains withheld. The department also urged Muslims to refrain from speculation, debate, or slander regarding the matter.

Why it matters

The case highlights enforcement of Malaysia's Syariah law and the sensitivity surrounding allegations against public figures.
