Selangor seeks legal counsel on possible appeal over flood liability ruling

Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari said he will obtain advice from the state legal adviser to decide whether to appeal the Shah Alam High Court decision that held the state partly responsible for recent floods.

The Shah Alam High Court ruled that Selangor agencies, including the Jabatan Pengairian dan Saliran (JPS) and Majlis Bandaraya Shah Alam (MBSA), share responsibility with the federal government for flood negligence. In response, Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari said he will seek guidance from the state’s legal adviser to determine if an appeal is warranted. He pointed to progress in flood mitigation, citing a rapid river-deepening effort that boosted Klang River capacity by roughly 20% and restored full pump functionality in Taman Sri Muda.

Shari noted that the comprehensive Klang River flood-control scheme, a joint JPS-federal initiative, is expected to finish by 31 January 2029. Meanwhile, the state’s separate river-deepening work, conducted with JPS under the Landasan Lumayan project, has required an outlay of RM30 million to RM40 million.
