The cab of the truck remained hooked on the bridge while the rest of the vehicle lay across the highway, creating a dramatic scene captured in photos. The driver was ejected during the impact, sustained major injuries and was evacuated by air to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno, Nevada.
California Highway Patrol officials reported significant traffic delays that persisted into the evening, and Caltrans indicated that eastbound traffic was fully restored around 1:37 a.m. The crash is under investigation, and the exact factors leading to the loss of control have not been released.
