Semitrailer overturn on I-70 spills dozens of cattle onto Kansas City streets
A semitrailer carrying about 120 cattle fell from an I-70 overpass in downtown Kansas City early Sunday, killing dozens and prompting a citywide animal roundup.
Shortly before 3 a.m. on Sunday, a semitrailer loaded with roughly 120 cattle plunged off the westbound I-70 curve over SB I-35 in downtown Kansas City, Missouri, landing on a vehicle and killing between 45 and 60 animals. The driver of the truck and the driver of the car each suffered minor injuries and were treated at local hospitals. Surviving cows scattered across city streets, leading to further collisions and numerous police calls as authorities attempted to contain the situation.
Kansas City Police Sergeant Phil DiMartino confirmed that all cattle had been accounted for by the afternoon. Kansas City Fire Battalion Chief Michael Hopkins described the use of drones and a private company working with the trucking firm, which deployed workers on horseback to round up the herd, some of which had trekked several miles before being captured. The incident coincided with a Kansas City Chiefs-Los Angeles Chargers NFL game, though officials said it did not significantly affect game-day traffic.
Why it matters
The crash caused multiple deaths, road closures and a costly animal rescue effort in a major U.S. city.
