Senate approves scholarships for students during school holidays

The Senate passed a bill to grant social, merit and technological scholarships to pupils even during vacation periods, pending approval by the Chamber of Deputies.

In a recent vote, the Senate adopted a bill that will provide social, merit and technological scholarships to students during school vacations, starting with one outlet academic year. The legislation expands the pool of eligible recipients and keeps the payments exempt from tax, meaning they do not count toward a family's average net monthly income for other social benefits. Eligibility criteria include passing all subjects and maintaining a high conduct rating, with no application required; teachers will nominate candidates early in the term.

The measure aims to reduce absenteeism and school dropout rates. The proposal now awaits passage by the Chamber of Deputies before it can be promulgated.
