Senate debates extension of France's rent-control experiment, backed by socialist deputy
Socialist deputy Iñaki Echaniz expressed optimism that the Senate will approve a bill to prolong the rent-control trial in several French cities.
A socialist parliamentarian, Iñaki Echaniz, voiced confidence that his bill to lengthen the rent-control trial will secure Senate approval. He highlighted the urgency of addressing household purchasing power and suggested that political parties will be reluctant to abandon rent-moderation tools. The proposal seeks to keep the rent-cap in place across nine urban areas that have been part of the ELAN-initiated experiment, including Paris, Lille, Lyon and others.
The Senate, which currently holds a right-wing majority, will examine the measure in an upcoming session. Echaniz warned that without legislative action, the temporary rent limits could lapse, affecting nearly 70 municipalities.
Why it matters
Extending rent caps could affect housing affordability for thousands of renters in major French cities.
